DevOps Engineer (eDV Cleared)
DevOps Engineer (eDV Cleared)
Location: Gloucester or Manchester | This role normally requires four days per week on site, with five days per week on site likely depending on the project.
Grade: GG08–GG12
Requisition ID: 123497
Quick Overview
Build and operate the technology that helps National Security teams deliver critical outcomes.
As a DevOps Engineer in Digital Intelligence, you will bring software development, infrastructure and operations together to make delivery faster, safer and more reliable. You could automate complex deployment processes, build cloud and container platforms, strengthen operational resilience or help multidisciplinary teams move new capabilities into service.
This is an opportunity to solve meaningful engineering problems while developing breadth across automation, cloud, infrastructure, security and service operations. You will work alongside people with different technical and professional perspectives, share what you know and learn from the experience around you.
We welcome applications from DevOps Engineers at different career stages across grades GG08 to GG12. We do not expect every candidate to have worked with every technology or discipline listed below.
National Security in Digital Intelligence
Digital Intelligence has more than 40 years of experience supporting National Security customers and their vital missions.
Our teams apply technology, engineering and professional expertise to challenges where security, reliability and effective delivery matter. DevOps Engineers play an important part in this work by creating the automated pathways, platforms and operational practices that allow secure capabilities to move from development into dependable use.
The work can involve modern cloud-native platforms as well as established infrastructure. That creates varied technical challenges and opportunities to develop experience across the full delivery lifecycle.
Your National Security SubAccounts
DevOps opportunities are available across all four National Security SubAccounts. The precise team, technical environment and mission context will depend on business and customer requirements, your experience and the available vacancy.
Core Machine
Core Machine opportunities focus on the platforms, engineering foundations and enabling capabilities that help National Security teams deliver effectively. As a DevOps Engineer, you may contribute to secure, repeatable and maintainable delivery environments supporting a range of technical teams.
Cyber Engineering
Cyber Engineering brings together engineering and security considerations throughout the technology lifecycle. DevOps Engineers help teams automate securely, manage infrastructure consistently and build security into delivery practices from the outset rather than treating it as a final-stage activity.
Emergent Mission & Tech
Emergent Mission & Tech explores developing mission needs and technology challenges. DevOps Engineers may help teams test, integrate and operationalise new approaches, creating reliable engineering foundations through which ideas can be assessed and moved towards practical use.
Mission Operations
Mission Operations focuses on the dependable operation and continued improvement of capabilities in service. DevOps Engineers may support platform reliability, monitoring, incident and change processes, workload management and the reduction of repetitive operational effort through automation.
Across these SubAccounts, the common purpose is clear: use sound engineering to help people deliver and sustain technology on which important missions depend.
What You Will Be Doing
Your responsibilities will vary according to your grade, experience and project. They may include:
- Designing, building and maintaining automation for the integration, testing, deployment and operation of software and infrastructure.
- Developing and improving continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.
- Creating repeatable ways to configure, deploy, scale and manage application workloads.
- Building and maintaining public or private cloud environments.
- Deploying and operating containerised applications and orchestration platforms.
- Applying configuration management and source-control practices to infrastructure, application and deployment artefacts.
- Configuring, hardening and maintaining operating systems and infrastructure.
- Using programming or scripting to remove repetitive work, improve consistency and support reliable delivery.
- Diagnosing issues across infrastructure, applications, networks and databases, then working with the appropriate specialists to identify root causes.
- Embedding security throughout development and operational processes.
- Supporting capabilities in operational environments through monitoring, maintenance, service requests, incident management and controlled change.
- Applying Site Reliability Engineering principles to improve availability, resilience and supportability.
- Producing proportionate architecture and technical documentation using relevant patterns, practices and frameworks.
- Working as part of a multidisciplinary Agile team and contributing constructively to planning, reviews and other team activities.
- Sharing knowledge within the project and across the wider engineering community.
- Supporting and guiding colleagues where appropriate to the grade and scope of the position.
This role is not limited to one part of the delivery lifecycle. You will help teams consider how technology will be built, deployed, secured, operated and improved.
Essential Skills
We are looking for evidence of capability in DevOps, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, Site Reliability Engineering or a closely related discipline.
You should be able to demonstrate experience in several of the following areas:
- Building or maintaining continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.
- Automating infrastructure, software delivery or operational processes through code or scripting.
- Configuring and managing at least one public or private cloud platform.
- Configuring, hardening or maintaining at least one operating system.
- Working with a containerisation platform and an associated orchestration tool.
- Applying source control and configuration-management practices.
- Supporting application deployment and understanding dependencies between applications and their underlying infrastructure.
- Diagnosing technical problems across one or more of infrastructure, application code, networking and databases.
- Applying security considerations during development, deployment and operation.
- Working with established infrastructure or legacy technology where modernisation is incremental rather than immediate.
- Contributing within an Agile or Scrum delivery environment.
- Applying, or demonstrating an understanding of, Site Reliability Engineering principles.
- Communicating technical information clearly and working effectively with colleagues from different disciplines.
- Sharing knowledge and adapting your approach when requirements, technology or operational circumstances change.
The depth and breadth expected will be proportionate to the grade. You do not need experience in every area to apply. Your ability to build on existing knowledge, make evidence-based engineering decisions and contribute effectively to a team will also be considered.
Security Clearance
Due to the security requirements of this role, applicants must hold a current and active Enhanced Developed Vetting (eDV) clearance to be considered for this opportunity.
