Job Title Weights Mass Property Engineering Industrial Placement Location Barrow (Cumbria) BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Undergraduate Programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager. Salary £22,000 How do you decide how heavy a submarine should be before you start designing it? How do you make sure that when you design a submarine it will stick to pre-determined weight limits once it’s been built? How do you accurately estimate the mass of an entire submarine and the 250,000+ individual components that it’s made from (some weighing just grams and some weighing thousands of tonnes)? How can you be sure you are confident about the accuracy of these estimates? How do you make sure that weight is evenly distributed around the submarine, so that is can dive and re-surface? If you want to help solve these problems, so that BAE Systems can design, build and deliver existing and future classes of cutting edge and technologically advanced submarines to the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy, then we want to hear from you! What you will be doing As a Weights Engineering Undergraduate, you will be working as a part of a specialist team, who work closely with a range of other engineering teams and submarine systems owners (e.g. Reactor, Secondary Propulsion, Electrical, Operations, Instrumentation and Calibration, and Naval Architecture), across all submarine programmes (Astute, Dreadnought and SSNA [the replacement for the Astute class of submarine]). You will have the opportunity to get involved in all stages of the submarine’s life cycle, from concept design, through to in-build support and commissioning activities (such as a sea trials). We also provide the opportunity to get involved in projects outside of your primary remit. We encourage you to seek a stretch project in which you’ll gain different experiences.
