Job Title: Engineering Manager – Software 

Location: New Malden, hybrid- 3 days per week on site

Salary: Up to £74,000 dependent on skills and experience

Job Description: 

As an Engineering Manager for SMCS (Submarine Command System) you will play a pivotal leadership role across multidisciplined SMCS project teams, shaping technical direction and delivering complex platform systems for the fleet of UK Submarines. You will oversee the development of design solutions aligned to time, cost and quality targets, ensuring engineering activities are effectively governed and coordinated, meeting system performance, contractual requirements and applicable standards/regulations.

Core duties: 

  • Provide guidance to the software team for the requirements, design, implementation, testing and verification of the SMCS Software system.
  • Ensure the interaction with the project customers or other stakeholders to establish operational scenarios/concepts, elicit and capture business requirements for subsequent elaboration and development.
  • Define, establish and monitor the execution of software engineering activities for a project. This will mean ensuring that project deliverables are delivered, in agreed timescales and costs to meet all contractual requirements in line with applicable standards/regulations (including safety, security and quality).
  • Collaborate with the Engineering teams to report progress, plan, and estimate work

Essential Skills: 

  • An Engineer with varied Software engineering knowledge, having demonstrated their ability across several Software development projects to design and deliver robust solutions
  • Background in System development and/or delivery, preferably in a large, multi-layered project environment
  • Demonstratable experience with supporting engineering activities, utilising appropriate methodologies, processes, procedures and best practices, and reporting on costs for a project or large team.
  • Degree qualified in a relevant STEM subject, or equivalent working experience

The Submarine Command System (SMCS) Team:

The SMCS team sits at the heart of the Submarine Command System (SMCS) projects/programmes providing situation awareness (via Tactical Picture Compilation) and Weapons Management capability for all submarines in the Royal Navy flotilla. .
