Job Title: Project Leader – Construction Engineering (Hull & Outfit)

Location: Barrow-In-Furness – Onsite

Salary: £47,241 – £56,462 (Commensurate with skills and experience)

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide frontline engineering support to Operations and Commissioning Teams for Hull and Outfit activities across multiple contracts and sites nationwide.
  • Lead and manage a team of design engineers and technical staff, ensuring effective workload distribution, coaching, and professional development.
  • Support Management and Project Control, ensuring delivery against KPI‘s and cost objectives.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with interfacing teams, departments, organisations, and the customer.
  • Chair and attend regular stakeholder meetings to ensure activities within your remit are managed and delivered on time.
  • Drive continuous improvement through Learning from Experience initiatives and DFMEA reviews.
  • Oversee resolution of technical queries, inquiry, non-conformances, and concessions related to Hull and Outfit systems.
  • Resolve escalated technical queries, inquiry forms, non-conformances, and concessions related to Hull and Outfit systems.
  • Govern quality for all team outputs ensuring they are quality, authorised and cost effective.

 

Your skills and experiences:

Essential

  • Strong leadership and team management experience within engineering or technical environments.
  • Ability to communicate technical information and build trusted relationships across all levels within BAE Systems, suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Knowledge of hull structures, outfit systems, penetrations, fittings, and associated installation processes.
  • Experience in problem-solving and design coordination across multiple disciplines and functions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant PLM tools (e.g., Teamcenter, SAP).

 

Desirable:

  • Experience working with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in designing Hull & Outfit structures, primary and secondary steelwork, jigs, fixtures and compartment outfitting through various stages of submarine or ship design and build stages
  • Strong understanding of 2D and 3D CAD modelling and output techniques, ideally using CADDS 5 and/or Foran Toolsets
  • Familiarity with production query, change request, non-conformance, and concession processes

 

Qualifications:

  • HNC / NVQ Level 3 in an engineering or technically based subject (or equivalent).
  • CMI, Institute of Leadership and Management Level 2 or 3 qualification (or equivalent).

The Construction Engineering Team:

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Project Leader – Construction Engineering (Hull & Outfit), working within The Construction Engineering Team. You will play a pivotal leadership role in Construction Engineering management, leading a team responsible for delivering Hull & Outfit engineering support to build, in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment

As a Construction Engineering Project Leader, you will take ownership of resolving emergent design and build issues quickly and effectively, while driving continuous improvement across all activities. You will act as the key interface between build-related functions and Engineering, ensuring seamless collaboration to support production, design, test and commissioning for Hull and Outfit systems.

This is a dynamic role spanning multiple programmes, where you will contribute to the successful delivery of some of the most advanced submarine platforms; balancing urgency with uncompromising quality.

Should you wish to relocate closer to the nuclear site at Barrow, we offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
