Job Title: Principal Engineer – Materials Technology (Non Metallic Coatings)

What you’ll be doing:
· To act as technical authority (on behalf of the delegated design authority) for all aspects of non-metallic material selection and application
· To ensure that all non-metallic material related procedures and specifications represent best practice and are properly enforced
· Liaise with MoD with regard to customer requirements
· Review of technical data concerning effectiveness of existing and future use of non-metallic materials
· Ensure that all non-metallic materials used on Astute / Dreadnought class are fully compliant with contractual requirements
· Awareness of design requirements for non-metallic materials on Astute / Dreadnought class design and/or provide specialist advice and qualification of their scope of responsibility and provide evidence for acceptance and fitness for purpose
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
· Minimum of degree level qualification in Materials, Chemistry or related subject
· CEng/CSci
· Must be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of non-metallic materials
· Experience of carrying out forensic analysis of non-metallic materials
· Good reporting and communication skills
· MSc or ability to attain it is desirable

The Coatings and Corrosion Team:
Working in a team of 12, which is growing to support the programmes and developments within the material management. The team work with the breathable atmosphere looking at materials and their effect on the confined environment.
The team consists of specialists within materials, but also looking at REACH, COSHH and Sustainability. Working across all of the programmes you will be working in many different areas from initial design all the way through to the disposal, recycling and re-use of materials.
There is the ability to get involved into many aspects of materials selection, use and assist with the production of the boats. We undertake R&T work to develop materials for use on board, but also for specific applications to deliver a product which is world class. The department is growing, there is progression and succession plans in place which allows for the ideal role holder to develop through our technical or management route.
