BAE Systems are recruiting positions for our Capability Enhancement (DCE) program. Our workforce built and now lead the sustainment and upgrade of the Royal Australian Navy’s three Hobart class air warfare destroyers — HMAS Hobart, HMAS Brisbane, and HMAS Sydney. These ships are designed to provide anti-aircraft warfare screening for the fleet and can also engage in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We have exciting new opportunities for Mechanical Technicians for the specialist areas of Auxiliary/HVAC to join our Hobart Class Destroyer Capability Enhancement, Test and Commissioning Program on a permanent full time basis.

Based onsite at our Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, we offer flexible work options, including hybrid arrangements and a 9-day fortnight to help you balance work and life.

Reporting to the Auxiliaries & Hotel Services Lead, you’ll play a key role in conducting Installation & Set to Work (STW) activities, Testing, Commissioning & Maintenance of Ships Systems and Equipment ensuring the continued successful operation of the Destroyers for the Royal Australian Navy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set to work, test, integrate and commission equipment and systems.
  • Development and preparation of accurate technical documentation including test procedures and reports.
  • Provide expert technical (hands on) services to projects.
  • Provide input to planning and maintenance of schedules.
  • Assist in the design, construction, testing and acceptance of systems.
  • Defect analysis, resolution and provision of detailed technical reports.
  • Contribute to the analysis of complex technical problems to create solutions where precedent may not exist.
  • Make decisions and facilitate problem-solving guided by policies, procedures and business plans, with guidance and oversight from manager.
  • Working with minimum supervision, manage own time to address competing task priorities, ensuring all tasking is completed in accordance with assigned budget, schedule and priority.
  • Work as directed by Test & Commissioning Technical Lead.
  • Act as the ship platform systems mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) assuming a crucial role conducting sea trials tests, encompassing its preparation, proficient management, and meticulous execution.
  • Carry out tasks in a safe manner including planning isolations of ships systems and writing/reviewing risk assessments.
  • Attend training where required to upskill and develop into a Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP).

ABOUT YOU

  • Hold a Certificate III or higher Trade Qualification in Mechanical Engineering that is Nationally recognised.
  • Significant post-trade experience in a complex production or Industrial environment.
  • Strong experience in Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure and multitask simultaneously within a production environment.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with employees and customers at all levels.
  • Demonstrated professional integrity, advanced level of technical knowledge, objectivity, acceptance of responsibility, maturity of judgement.
  • Desire to seek and share good practice and technical knowledge locally to continuously improve own practices whilst improving safety on the worksite.
  • Self-motivated and proactive to support working autonomously diagnosing production issues, developing solutions and ensuring issues are driven to closure.
  • Possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain appropriate defence security clearance and eligibility to be cleared for International Traffic in Arms (ITAR) regulations.
