What you will be doing
As a Supply Chain Higher Apprentice your role can extend to a huge range of activities such as supplier management, financial analysis, contract law, and developing strategy to deliver goods and services. You’ll be on the contracts exciting journey from conception through to delivery and payment.
Having high quality, good value products available at the right time for our build programmes is critical to our ability to meet business deadlines. Supply Chain Higher Apprentices will have the opportunity to gain skills in every area of the function. The projects and placements undertaken by our Supply Chain Higher Apprentices are diverse. You’ll be rotating every 6 months into a new placement experiencing everything from: Procurement, Logistics & Transport, Strategy and Risk to Governance and Capability. These placements will also provide the apprentice with experience within different platforms such as Dreadnought, Astute and In-service.
During this three-year Higher Apprenticeship you will be responsible for researching, sourcing, buying, storing, maintaining and delivering equipment that goes onto our submarines. Moreover, this must all be delivered at the right time, for the right cost and to the right quality standards.
You will be part of a growing network of stakeholders within Integrated Combat Systems Supply Chain which is nearing 90 professionals strong and includes an early careers community. Working with many different stakeholders such as suppliers, legal, commercial, engineers, project managers of all grades and responsibilities will enable you to grow in confidence and capability.
Everyday skills you’ll develop with be broad, from placing purchase orders for multi-million pound contracts, helping to improve policies and procedures, to figuring out how to store the hundreds of thousands of items needed to build our submarines. As a result, trainees develop an in-depth understanding of Supply Chain activities and processes, plus all the expertise needed to become an integral member of the future Supply Chain function.
Overview of business unit
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges.
