What you will be doing?
During the Engineering Higher Apprenticeship you will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours in a range of different engineering disciplines whilst gaining valuable experience in electrical and electronic manufacturing engineering environments which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment with a view of becoming a Test Engineer.
The Engineering Higher Apprenticeship is a 3-year scheme during which you will spend time in a number of different placements within the business where you will undertake a range of engineering activities and be exposed to different aspects the project lifecycle. You will attend college during the first 2 years on a day release programme to complete the Higher National Certificate (HNC).
During the first 6 months of the apprenticeship you will spend time in Portsmouth Naval Base’s Skills and Development Centre where you will develop your practical engineering skills. At the end of the 3 years, you will be required to complete and pass an End Point Assessment which confirms you have gained the required knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship.
What Qualification will you get?
By the end of the apprenticeship you will obtain:
• Level 4 Apprenticeship Certificate (Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Standard)
• Higher National Certificate in Engineering
• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (If not previously achieved)

Our services include ship upgrades, repairs, dockyard facilities management and provision of combat systems training. We also develop and support the Royal Navy’s complex equipment, such as radar, torpedoes and small boats.
With our international programmes and core support to the Ministry of Defence, you could find yourself working on the iconic Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, Type 45 Destroyers, Type 23 Frigates, Type 26 Global Combat Ships, Hunt Class Mine Countermeasure Vessels, Offshore Patrol Vessels, historic ships and more. Our highly skilled teams design, develop, support and maintain a wide range of complex equipment. This includes Spearfish, one of the most powerful and capable wire guided torpedoes on the market. Currently undergoing a major upgrade programme, Spearfish will soon benefit from further sophisticated advances in its homing, warheads, tactical and fuelling systems, as well an upgraded guidance link. Then there’s Artisan, the 3D radar that can identify a target the size of a tennis ball, travelling at a speed of more than 2000 miles an hour more than 25 kilometres away!
