Description

Job Title: Systems Engineer Graduate
Location: Barrow

We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: £34,000 + £2000 welcome bonus

Would you like to play a role in one of the most advanced engineering projects in the world and one of the most significant and complex defence programmes in the UK?  Are you good at solving problems by looking at them from the bigger picture?  Do you enjoy the challenge of predicting how changing one part of a complex system will affect all the other parts and coming up with solutions which minimise the impact of changes on the system as a whole?  Then systems engineering is the perfect career path for you!

What you will be doing:
As a Systems Engineering Graduate you could be working in a variety of roles across Dreadnought and SSNA [the replacement for the Astute class of submarine]) programmes.  You will have the opportunity to get involved at all stages of a submarine’s life cycle, helping to support a wide range of activities such as capturing system requirements and helping to design, test and improve systems and subsystems on the submarine.

We also provide the opportunity to get involved in projects outside of your primary remit. We encourage you to seek a stretch project in which you’ll gain different experiences. With our huge portfolio of products and our multinational presence, there are opportunities to get involved in something different around every corner. Additionally, we encourage involvement in community projects, STEM initiatives and support groups (called employee resource groups) which all provide valuable learning and development experiences that you may not have access to in your day-to-day role. To ensure we retain our talented people, we offer a blend of sponsorship, additional support in career development planning and a portfolio of high potential development programmes.  We are also fully committed to supporting graduates to work towards professional registration and Chartership with a range of professional institutes (e.g. INCOSE [International Council of Systems Engineering].  Our graduate scheme is accredited with a number of different professional institutes, which means that we have demonstrated high standards of delivery and support.

Our mission is to build a strong, diverse, adaptable, and high performing work force that will develop and grow our future business. We believe that everyone has talent, and at the heart of our talent management approach our ambition is to be recognised as the UK’s top employer in the defence and security sector for valuing diversity and inclusion. Accelerated development will be offered to those who have the aspiration, ability, and performance to fulfil roles that are critical to our future success. Using The Future Talent Programme, we select high potential graduates and provide them with further tailored development opportunities.

Specific activities could include:

•    Supporting the capture, definition, analysis and management of requirements;
•    Supporting system design, analysis, testing, optimisation and integration activities;
•    Building virtual models of systems and subsystems;
•    Using tools and software (e.g. Enterprise Architect, Matlab, Simulink, JURA) to support activities at different stages of a system’s life cycle;
•    Supporting modelling and simulation activities;
•    Supporting system validation and verification activities (Did we build the right system and did we build it in the right way?).
The breadth of activities above gives an indication of the wide array of activities carried out by a Systems Engineer. You should note that there is the opportunity to tailor both your Graduate experience and final role to the type of work that you find most enjoyable once you have experienced the different types of roles within the team. This could be more testing or modelling focussed or more of a hybrid role.
