Job Title     Graduate Structural Engineer 

Location     Barrow (Cumbria)

BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Graduate Programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

What you will be doing
As a Structural engineering graduate, you will join an exciting team who work throughout the whole submarine life cycle, from concept through to activities with the operational fleet.  As part of this team, you could be involved in designing, developing and testing complex systems, components and products, as well as supporting the build, test, commissioning and in service operation of all current, new and future classes of submarine (including Astute, Dreadnought and SSNA [the replacement of the Astute class of submarine]).  

We also provide the opportunity to get involved in projects outside of your primary remit. We encourage you to seek a stretch project in which you’ll gain different experiences. Specific activities could include:
•    Supporting the Structural Design of Submarines, including:
o    Pressure Hull design
o    Propulsor design
o    Shafting, Steering and Hull Mechanics Design
o    Outfit design – including sheet metal, deck coverings, furniture and fittings, to ensure a habitable submarine environment
o    Designing equipment to withstand shock and dynamic movements of the submarine whilst in operation
o    Jig and Lifting Arrangement Design and oversight of submarine movements within our Specialist Structural Engineering team
o    Structural and Stress Analysis (including classic calculation methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA))

The breadth of activities above gives an indication of the wide array of activities carried out by the department. 

Skills
As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant STEM subject, Structural, Mechanical or Civil Engineering.
