Salary        £34,000 + £2,000 Welcome Bonus

Do you want to help design, build and maintain bespoke measurement instrumentation to support the build, testing and commissioning of current, new and future classes of nuclear submarine (Astute, Dreadnought and SSNA [the replacement for the Astute class of submarine])? Do you want to help develop and maintain novel, cutting edge and accurate measurement systems and technologies for use in a complex engineering setting (e.g. using laser scanners to take measurements of dimensions, to ensure submarines adhere to design specifications)?  Do you want to make sure that the readings taken by our measurement equipment and systems are accurate and repeatable and comply with recognised standards (e.g. using quantum caesium standards to check for and correct errors in measurement equipment)?   Then this is the perfect role for you.

What you will be doing

As a graduate Metrologist, you will be working within an exciting and collaborative team, which pulls together knowledge and expertise from multiple engineering disciplines (including Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic and Software specialisms), to develop, deploy and support complex measurement and monitoring systems from cradle to grave.  The metrology department’s work involves taking instrumentation equipment and systems throughout their entire lifecycle from requirements to prototype, testing, commissioning and deployment.  The department is involved in using specialist measurement equipment (e.g. micrometers, voltmeters, multimeters and pressure gauges) to take accurate and repeatable measurements for a wide array of parameters in new and unique ways (including temperature, dimensions, accelerometry, mass, pressure, shock, non-ionising radiation, ionising radiation, noise and vibration, torque, voltage and current).  This makes the work of the department particularly diverse and varied.  We actively promote the development of our team within each discipline, encouraging secondment into adjacent disciplines where appropriate, and provide strong progression and professional development opportunities to staff along both technical and managerial career paths.

We also provide the opportunity to get involved in projects outside of your primary remit. We encourage you to seek a stretch project in which you’ll gain different experiences. With our huge portfolio of products and our multinational presence, there are opportunities to get involved in something different around every corner. Additionally, we encourage involvement in community projects, STEM initiatives and support groups (called employee resource groups) which all provide valuable learning and development experiences that you may not have access to in your day-to-day role. To ensure we retain our talented people, we offer a blend of sponsorship, additional support in career development planning and a portfolio of high potential development programmes.  We are also fully committed to supporting graduates to work towards professional registration and Chartership with a range of professional institutes (e.g. the IET and IMechE).  Our graduate scheme is accredited with a number of different professional institutes, which means that we have demonstrated high standards of delivery and support.

Our mission is to build a strong, diverse, adaptable, and high performing work force that will develop and grow our future business. We believe that everyone has talent, and at the heart of our talent management approach our ambition is to be recognised as the UK’s top employer in the defence and security sector for valuing diversity and inclusion. Accelerated development will be offered to those who have the aspiration, ability, and performance to fulfil roles that are critical to our future success. Using The Future Talent Programme, we select high potential graduates and provide them with further tailored development opportunities.

Specific activities could include:
•    Building, integrating and testing bespoke instrumentation solutions where suitable commercial options aren’t available;
•    Supporting novel research projects connected to advance and novel sensing (e.g. how to sense strain);
•    Supporting emergent site instrumentation projects identifying effective solutions to emerging problems related to metrology and calibration
•    Installing, maintaining, and repairing in-service monitoring systems installed throughout the Barrow site (e.g. detecting and monitoring ionising and non-ionising radiation)
•    Helping to deploy, operate, and maintain monitoring systems used to support various manufacturing and trials activities across all submarine build programmes
•    Managing data quality and integrity for manufacturing and trials instrumentation systems
•    Understanding emergent measurement technologies and systems developed by other institutions (e.g. National Physics Laboratory) and how they can be implemented in an industrial setting.

Skills
As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering, Control Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, or Maths or relevant STEM degree (Biology or Chemistry).

Benefits
You’ll receive benefits including a competitive pension scheme, enhanced annual leave allowance and a Company contributed Share Incentive Plan. You’ll also have access to additional benefits such as flexible working, an employee assistance programme, Cycle2work and employee discounts – you may also be eligible for an annual incentive.
