Job Title: Engineer – Materials Technology (Composites)
Location: Barrow-In-Furness (Hybrid – 3 days onsite per fortnight or 1 full week every 3 weeks) – We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.
Salary: £35,802+ depending on skills and experience
What you’ll be doing:
- Assist with identification, research, assessment and trials of composite materials for extreme environments
- Contributing towards the research arm of the Composites Strategy for submarines
- Assist with the validation of materials engineering related processes, instructions and associated documents
- Draft technical reports relevant to a particular task to ensure findings are successfully communicated with internal and external customers
- Liaise with internal and external customers to satisfy the needs of a project and to administer minor trials for future generation, in-built, or in-service platforms
- Actively participate in working groups, trade shows, workshops and seminars to develop a network of professional contacts
- Participate in raising the overall discipline skills to meet current and future R&T requirements in the MTC
- Ensure the work undertaken is in accordance with wider BAE Systems, HSE, Environmental, contractual and local business processes, standards, and procedures
Your skills and experiences:
Essential
- BEng in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry or equivalent experience
- Knowledge and understanding in Polymers and composites
- Demonstrable experience in interpreting and communicating technical information to others
- Demonstrable experience in research and development
Desirable
- Stakeholder Management experience
- Evidence of previous experience with Composites Structural Analysis, CAD, or SolidWorks
- Experience with writing project proposals or business cases

The Materials Research & Technology team:
As an Engineer on this team, you will be working with a recently formed team that focuses on research and development of materials for harsh environments. The team works on projects across all submarine platforms from in-service support to future generations. You will be supporting and leading the R&D projects workings with various stakeholders and our research partners. You will contribute to the Composites Strategy with progression and career development opportunities as the team grows. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
