What you will be doing

The Test and Commissioning Degree Apprenticeship offers a wide and exciting variety of opportunities in a broad spectrum of Test and Commissioning disciplines. The Apprentices will work as part of a dedicated team to meet departmental goals whilst developing their technical skills & understanding of the different Test Sections & T&C processes. The individuals will gain experience working towards key events of the boat build and will develop their skills and knowledge through rotations in each of the five test sections within the department – Reactor, Propulsion, Ships, Weapon and Strategic Weapons. 

During your Test and Commissioning Degree apprenticeship you will be given visibility of a range of disciplines in which a personal development plan will be created for your learning and development needs associated with your role. This includes bespoke technical training along with placements around the business. The following discipline specific apprenticeship roles are currently available and are supported by an associated level 6 degree apprenticeship:

•    Electrical 
•    Mechanical 

When qualified, commissioning engineers will set to work, test and commission various submarine systems. There will be the opportunity go to sea on the submarines to conduct sea trials alongside the Royal Navy Crew. 

Test & Commissioning, within Submarine Solutions, gives people the opportunity to work on live systems and see them operate at sea, and underwater.
You will be working on the submarines alongside test engineers, helping with setting up and testing systems while learning the commissioning process, the software involved and safe working practices. You will learn system layouts and their operation in all sections of the submarine as well as the complexity and diversity of the commissioning process.

Overview of business unit

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are involved in the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges.

Qualification requirements

5 GCSEs grade A*-C or 4-9 (or equivalent), including Math’s, English and Science / a technical subject. Plus 96 UCAS Tariff Points (240 point old system), all at grade C or above, including Math’s and one other STEM subject (excluding General Studies) Or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in a STEM subject at grade MMM or above.
