As an Information Management & Technology (IM&T) Degree Apprentice you will work alongside and will be mentored by highly skilled individuals who provide information technology and data solutions to the wider Submarines business. Through on the job learning and higher education you will develop a range of skills and competencies both technical and non-technical. You will learn how IM&T (our IT function) help the business throughout the design, build, test and commissioning of our submarines. Whether it is managing a project to deliver a new piece of software or developing new and improved IT Systems, IM&T is a varied department with so many opportunities to find those skills you have yet to develop. The breadth of skillsets below gives an indication of the wide array of activities carried out by the department. You will undertake a rotation of placements across a number of ambitious teams within IM&T, giving you a breadth of different experiences. Our IM&T Skillsets are based on the globally recognised SFIA Framework and these are aligned to five IM&T Career Paths:

Across the team, we have specialists working in product development, application support, testing, data and business analysis, business relationship management, and architecture, project management, information security, security architecture, and compliance, governance and people capability. This is not an exhaustive list. We will identify what areas of IM&T interest you and which Skillsets you have a particular talent for, allowing you to identify what to specialise in within your degree programme. Overview of business unit The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes. Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world’s most complex engineering challenges. We have sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Filton, Frimley, Ash Vale, Broad Oak and Weymouth, and we pride ourselves on employing the best professionals around.
