What you will be doing

As a Product Development Engineer Apprentice you’ll be the one who turns ideas into products.  You’ll be involved in the design, development and testing of complex systems operating in harsh environments.  In the early stages of a project, you’ll apply scientific principles and technical information to generate concept ideas.  After this, you’ll select the most suitable design and turn it into a viable solution.

Our military and commercial programmes require us to push our capabilities and technologies to the limit of what is achievable today.  This raises many challenges for the system as it must ultimately meet both our customer’s stringent safety requirements and bring leading edge performance to give competitive advantage wherever applied.

Successful applicants will form part of a multi-disciplined Engineering development team involved in the development, design, manufacture and test of a number of new and legacy munitions products for UK and export customers.

The specific role will involve you in all stages of the product lifecycle; concepts, development, testing, qualification, production and in service support within one of the Engineering teams based in Glascoed, South Wales.

Responsible for integrating the requirements of a number of Engineering disciplines into a cohesive whole.

Main responsibilities and duties could include but not be limited to:

  • Assisting in the analysis of customer requirements and their subsequent decomposition into functional system and sub system design requirements.
  • Carry out Engineering calculations as required to justify a proposed course of action.
  • Developing inspection and quality controls.
  • Assisting in trade studies and supplier selection, including equipment/supplier surveys and selection.
  • Attending trials and providing technical advice where required.
  • Compiling technical data to support design approval.
  • Planning, carrying out and reporting results from Test and Evaluation trials.
  • The generation and review of technical reports and other technical documentation.
  • Gaining experience in placements outside product engineering such as process engineering, production, explosive testing and analytical laboratories.

What Qualification will you get?

Eich cyf (acwcerts.co.uk)

The degree you will study for is: Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Apprenticeships | University of Wales Trinity Saint David (uwtsd.ac.uk)

The academic learning will be by block release at The University of Wales Trinity St David (Swansea) and include Fridays. Apprentices are required to supply their own laptop for university work.  University travel and expenses will be covered by the business.

Working Arrangements

37 hours per week.  On site at Glascoed this is typically 07.15-17.00 Monday – Thursday but may vary occasionally to support learning opportunities and business requirements.  Some travel may be required.  Note that the Glascoed site is not readily accessible by public transport.
