What you will be doing
As a Support Engineer, the role will involve developing & applying your understanding of a range of Supportability Engineering Integrated Product Support (IPS) processes, tools, systems and techniques. Applying these to the review and analysis of supplier data against components, equipment’s and systems where you can develop support solutions to both in-service & future RN platforms.
During this 3 year Advanced (Level 3) apprenticeship programme, the main duties undertaken will involve, developing Operating and Maintenance procedures for Submarine systems and equipment, managing the Build Configuration Record of the Boat and aiding in the delivery of the Supporting Technical Documentation for systems and equipment fitted to the platform. You will also provide the associated spares required on-board the Submarine which will be carried on operations and held at Base including the Ashore facilities and Test Equipment in order to conduct maintenance.
The main duties include:
- Conduct Design for Support – ensuring what is designed can be supported
- Conduct Availability and Reliability analysis – Using modelling tools and techniques to assess the reliability and availability of equipment’s and systems
- Conduct Reliability Centered Maintenance –Using approved industry toolsets to assess what might break and what needs maintenance and when
- Conduct Data and Application Management – Understanding, managing and analysing data across multiple applications and disciplines
- Design Support Solutions – Ensuring that the Support Solution integrates and considers the elements considered under IPS
- Comply Initial Support Packages – Ensuring that the right Spares & Tools are in the right locations, at the right time, in the right condition and with the correct quantities.
- Production of digital technical information that is complete, coherent and consistent –Supporting operation, maintenance, diagnosis, repair and disposal through-life
- Configuration Management of data and products – Understanding what you have and in what condition

A Submarine is just like any other vehicle and attracts a requirement for maintenance. As a Support Engineer you would be looking at everything that is involved in this, from identifying what maintenance could be required, to the tools and spares required to carry out the maintenance and understanding the reliability and availability of the equipment on-board.
