Job Title: Advanced Apprentice Steelwork Fabricator 

Location: Glasgow

Salary: Starting from £18,018 with annual progression through the scheme duration.

What you will be doing:

During the Steelwork Fabricator Apprenticeship, you’ll be trained in the fabrication and installation of various sub-assemblies and major assemblies that are used to create our products. You will gain experience using a wide variety of tools and equipment covering marking out, thermal cutting and welding. You will learn to use equipment safely and efficiently to manufacture and install components to the highest degree of quality. 

Specific activities could include:

As a fabricator, you will be involved in the first stages of the unit build process fabricating sub-assemblies including shell plates, decks and bulkheads, fitting stiffener components to specific requirements. The next stage of your development will move on to the positioning and erecting of sub-assemblies to create major assemblies and units using overhead cranes, chainblocks and hydraulic pumps. You will gain knowledge on reading and comprehending technical steelwork drawings learning engineering symbols and conventions. In addition you will be trained on the installation of key outfitting components such as watertight doors and hatches utilizing fabrication processes such as Manual Metal Arc welding and Oxy-Fuel & Plasma thermal cutting techniques.

You will gain an extensive knowledge of health and safety, including working at height, confined spaces, safe systems of work and PPE, achieving our internal gold passport standard.

You will complete our steelwork training plan learning the fundamental elements of fabrication, including platework assembly using fairing aids, abrasive wheels, shipbuilding terminology, build strategy, thermal cutting processes and MMA welding, also covering our dynamic risk assessment process. You will also receive recognised welding qualification for tack welding.

Please be aware that many roles at BAE Systems are subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.
