Job Title:    Advanced Apprentice Naval Ships Steelwork Fabricator Shipwright, Glasgow
Location:   Glasgow

Salary: Starting from £17,127 with annual progression through the scheme duration.

What you will be doing:
During the Steelwork Fabricator Shipwright Apprenticeship, you’ll be trained in a range of Steelwork processes, Fabrication and MMA stick welding to ensure you have the required skill to gain valuable knowledge in structural steelwork. You will gain experience in main alignment on major steelwork units as well as pre-fabricated seats using knowledge gained with marking out, using a variety of tools and equipment such as Thermal cutting and welding. You will also be trained in Overhead cranes, as well as lifting aids such as chain blocks and Yale ratchet levers. Followed by more training in MEWPS, Scheuerle Transporters including driving and banks man this will ensure you will have required knowledge to gain experience in transportation and heavy lifting operations within BAE Systems Naval Ships. You will be involved in Tidal work and gain experience in Ship Docking, Ship Mooring and Ship launching tasks. You will learn to complete all of the above safely and efficiently to a high degree of quality.

Specific activities could include:
As a Shipwright you will be involved in a vastly experienced shipwright team, your main roles will be Transportation of ship units built in the fabrication shed and safely transporting the units to the Ship Block Outfit Hall (SBOH) this is where the shipwright team will turn the specific units and erect to its position you will follow a complex lift plan to ensure the safety of you and others around you. 
Main Alignment, this consists of using levelling and positioning the unit to a high degree of accuracy working with dimensional control. You will use tools such as thermal cutting and welding, push-pulls and a selection of jack pumps. 
Other roles within the shipwright team include tidal work so this will includes tasks such as preparing the ship for launch, Dock work for the Ship entering a dry dock. And also mooring work, understanding the ships ropes to ensure the ship has been tied up safely. 

What Qualification Will You Get?
Performing engineering operations SVQ 2 
National Certificate in welding & fabrication

Qualification requirements

5 Group awards at National 4 – Maths, English and Science or Technical Subjects required or equivalent (excluding Application of Maths).
