What you will be doing
During the Engineering Technician Mechanical Fitter Advanced Apprenticeship you will, through a range of different engineering activities develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship standard, whilst gaining valuable experience working on maritime vessels which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment.
The Engineering Technician Mechanical Fitter Advanced Apprenticeship is typically a 48 Month (4 years) scheme, the first year of which will be spent in our Skills and Development Centre completing a practical based qualification
The Mechanical Fitter must comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements and will be expected to work both individually and as part of a team. On completion of the Apprenticeship they will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake and will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas to improve business processes.
Specific activities could include:
The Mechanical Fitter role involves working from engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, fault diagnosis, maintenance, overhaul and removal of mechanical and fluid power equipment on ships and submarines involved in defence and commercial shipping. This can include propulsion machinery, weapons, reactor and auxiliary systems (such as water, air conditioning and power generation).
It requires knowledge and expertise in the use of common and specialist machine and hand tools, and the use of a variety of measuring and diagnostic equipment and processes to ensure individual components and assemblies meet the required specification.
What Qualification will you get?
By the end of the apprenticeship you will obtain:
• Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Certificate
• Level 3 Maritime Defence Engineering (Development Knowledge & Competence)
• Level 2 Maritime Defence Engineering (Foundation Knowledge & Competence)
• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (If not previously achieved)

Then there’s Artisan, the 3D radar that can identify a target the size of a tennis ball, travelling at a speed of more than 2000 miles an hour more than 25 kilometres away!
