Job Description:

The HVAC Technical Lead is an experienced practitioner within the HVAC sub‑discipline of Detail Design, providing day‑to‑day technical support, guidance and oversight to designers working on HVAC systems. The role supports the delivery of safe, compliant and well‑integrated HVAC designs that meet performance, safety, operability and through‑life requirements.

The position holder undertakes and oversees complex HVAC design activities, applying detailed knowledge of ventilation, heating, cooling, pressurisation, filtration and environmental control systems within a maritime context. They support the resolution of technical issues, interpret applicable standards and specifications and ensure HVAC designs are coordinated effectively with other ship systems.

In addition to technical delivery, the HVAC Technical Lead supports the Team Lead by assisting with task prioritisation, coordinating routine activities and assuming delegated responsibilities as required. They may attend design reviews, working groups or technical meetings on behalf of the Team Lead to provide HVAC input and support decision‑making. Through coaching, mentoring and informal leadership, the role contributes to the development of capability within the HVAC design team.

The role sets and maintains high standards within the team by leading through example, demonstrating strong technical capability and consistently modelling exemplary professional behaviours.

It requires comprehensive expertise in Detail Design and Design Management processes, ensuring high-quality delivery while promoting best practice, continuous improvement, and a strong culture of quality across the team.

Core duties:

  • Applying technical leadership and expertise to provide advice and guidance to other professionals within project/team
  • Working with the Team Lead using technical expertise to support prioritising team activities, ensuring schedule and cost-effective working is delivered alongside quality expectations
  • Effectively escalating where appropriate complex design issues and advise Detail Design Management on proposed technical resolutions
  • Contributing to technical governance in line with Quality Management Process

Essential Skills:

  • HNC/HND qualified (or equivalent experience) with EngTech status, or actively working towards IEng or CEng professional registration (UK)
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in HVAC systems and technologies
  • Experience in more than one phase of LCM (life cycle management), with sufficient experience of total LCM to enable awareness of adjacent phases / through life engineering issues
